This is a step by step video showing how I replaced the left rear axle seal on my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4. The rear axle shown is the very popular Chrysler 9.25" model, with a classical 'stop sign' shaped cover plate and 12 mounting bolts. This repair was necessary because of a small leak of axle fluid onto the inner brake structure on that side. Axle seal leaks are sometimes associated with a blocked vent tube, which causes a buildup of air pressure within the axle on a hot day, and secondary axle leaks. So, at some time during the repair you should check the vent tube of the axle to be sure it is patent. This video is made for entertainment purposes and is not to be construed as an instruction guide. I am not a professional mechanic so you should bear in mind that a professional might have accomplished this task very differently. If you need advice regarding how to repair your vehicle, you should consult a qualified professional. Remember also to take all appropriate safety precautions, certainly use safety glasses, and remember to carefully test your brakes after any vehicle repair. If you attempt to repair your vehicle, then you do so at your own risk.
